英语中,表示转折意思的时候我们经常用but这个连词,有时候会找找新鲜用however,但是用however时注意要加上一个逗号,如:She felt ill. She went to work, however, and tried to concentrate. 她病了. 然而她照旧去上班, 并且尽力集中精神工作.
那是为什么呢?(呵呵,最近小沈阳比较火)
原因是平时我们总是错把however这类的副词当连词用了,只知道它表示“然而,但是”的意思,但没清楚它的词性,表示这类意思时,however作副词充当状语,所以和后面的句子间要用逗号分隔。类似的词还有nevertheless,consequently等,如果要使用连词,那么就是but,whereas也是个不错的选择(这个词最近经常在论文中看到)。
为了详细点,看一看牛津字典的解释:
however / hauˈevə(r); haʊˋɛvɚ/ adv
1.(used before an adj or adv 后接形容词或副词) to whatever extent or degree 无论如何; 不管多么: You won’t move that stone, however strong you are. 不管你力气多大, 也休想搬动那块石头.
2. (used to comment on a previously stated fact 用于言及既成事实时表示转折) although sth is, was or may be true; nevertheless 然而; 不过; 仍然: * His first response was to say no. Later, however, he changed his mind. 他最初的反应是不同意. 可是後来他改变了主意.
另外however确实也可以作连词,但只表达“无论以何种方式; 不管怎样”。如:You can travel however you like. 你可以随心所欲地去旅行. * However I approached the problem, I couldn’t find a solution. 这一问题我不管怎样都无法解决.
这也是老师最近教的,原来很多时候总是凭感觉用词,慢慢地学会了查字典了,学习语言不能怕麻烦,多查查,多看看,慢慢地也就发现字典用的越来越少了。一点体会,与你分享
